Why Skanae Uses Gemma to Organize Your Scans
A scanned receipt still needs a useful name and a place in your files. Skanae Pro uses Gemma, Google's AI model family, to suggest a file name and category on your iPhone or iPad. This does not require Apple Intelligence to be enabled.
Information checked on 21 October 2026.
A name such as “Scan001.pdf” tells you little when you need a particular invoice. A useful suggestion helps you recognize it before you open the file.
AI for the filing step
In Skanae Pro, on-device OCR reads the text using Apple's Vision framework. Gemma helps suggest a category and a descriptive file name. The document processing takes place on your device.
Review the suggested name and category before saving. For a multi-page document, check that the name also fits the other pages.
A separate path from Apple Intelligence
Apple offers an on-device system language model through its Foundation Models framework. For an app to use it, the device and software must be eligible, Apple Intelligence must be enabled, and the model must be ready. Apple documents these availability conditions.
Language is another condition. As of 21 October 2026, Apple's iOS 27 list includes English, French, German, Japanese and other languages. Feature and language availability can vary with the software version. Apple Intelligence is available in the EU on supported devices.
Skanae downloads and runs its own Gemma model for document suggestions. Those suggestions do not depend on Apple's system model being enabled.
Google describes Gemma as multilingual, with smaller variants designed for local use on mobile devices. A multilingual model still cannot guarantee an equally good suggestion for every language or document.
Get the model ready before going offline
AI categorization and naming require Pro, the AI feature enabled, and a model that has downloaded and loaded successfully. Prepare it while you have a connection. Once it is ready, the document-suggestion processing itself runs locally without internet access.
The app uses the network to download the model and check subscription status. Those connections are separate from processing the contents of a scan.
Local processing and PDF storage
On-device processing and PDF storage are separate parts of the workflow. Active iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox storage can upload the resulting file. Check your active destinations if you want the PDF to remain only on your device.
With the model prepared, you can use its suggestions as part of the filing task: choose a name and category that fit the document, then save it to the destinations you intend. See Skanae on the App Store for the app and current Pro options.
